When Oliver Nowak joined VMware as a senior systems engineer, he was thrilled to learn about their commitment to being “a force for good.”

“VMware feels strongly about empowering their employees to do something to give back,” Oliver says. A leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, the Palo Alto, California–based company gives their employees 40 hours of time annually to volunteer for any organization they choose.

Oliver chose World Vision. He had first volunteered at the humanitarian organization’s Pittsburgh Global Distribution Center while at his former company and was struck by images on the walls that showed children receiving corporate donated items—such as school supplies and clothing—that the warehouse had processed.

Now at VMware, Oliver stays committed to supporting World Vision. “It’s great to take advantage of the time the company gives me to do something in my own backyard that makes a difference globally,” he says.

—Oliver Nowak, Senior Systems Engineer

Shortly after starting his new new job, Oliver recruited a small team of co-workers to volunteer together at the distribution center, where they worked side by side unpacking office equipment. “It was nice to get to speak to people outside the office, in real life,” he says.

Oliver appreciates that World Vision always explains how the items they’re helping to process will make an impact.

“They shared once that for most of the people receiving clothes, this is the first new item of clothing they’ve ever worn. They’ve always had to wear hand-me-downs. This is something new that they can own. That stuck with me,” he says.

Are you looking for a fun way to build team unity through volunteerism? World Vision has opportunities available across the U.S. – Appalachia; Chicago and Chicagoland; Greater New York; Hartford, Connecticut; North Texas; the Pacific Northwest; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Engage your organization and make a difference by volunteering with World Vision.

Now that millennials are the largest generation in the U.S. labor force, corporations are looking for ways to attract and retain them as employees. The picture is becoming clear: data shows workers want to belong to companies committed to positive impact through corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. A full three-quarters of millennials say they consider a company’s social and environmental commitments when deciding where to work. And the same number would prefer to work for a socially responsible company — even if it means less pay.

An increasing number of companies are rising to the challenge by engaging in CSR initiatives like employee directed giving and paid volunteer days. A recent Gallup shows that these efforts are working: Employee engagement is at 34 percent, it’s highest since Gallup began measuring the national figure in 2000. So how can companies maintain this success and even increase employee engagement to a new level? The answer is simple: Transformational engagement.

Transformational Engagement

Where traditional corporate social responsibility activities focus primarily on outcome, transformational engagement focuses on outcome plus relationships. When employees are invited to participate together in CSR efforts through volunteering, fundraising, and even planning and raising awareness of a CSR cause, they build relationships that can transform their outlook entirely. Sometimes its as simple coworkers from different offices or divisions meeting each other for the first time while giving back. Or team members getting to meet the people they volunteered to help, experiencing the gratitude firsthand.

When employees see the impact they’re making together, they take part in a shared story. Then excitement grows and engagement deepens. And the effect is multiplied when, instead of coordinating one-off volunteer projects, a company partners with an organization for a sustained relationship over time.

World Vision: Bringing Transformational Engagement to Your Company

World Vision is committed to bringing transformational engagement to corporations —the kind of opportunities that rally people to meaningful work and create a culture of storytelling for those shared experiences.

When we say your involvement and influence will change your company from the inside out, we believe it. And the best part is you’ll help kids and families change their lives, too! Here are a few ways your company can partner with World Vision to get the transformation started:

  • Global 6K for Water – Unite your employees, engage your community, and elevate your brand by helping bring clean water to families around the world who need it most. Host a Global 6K for Water to give participants the opportunity to have fun while doing good. Or become an annual national sponsor for the event and receive significant exposure in U.S. markets.
  • Volunteering at a warehouse – Donate time to help sort and prepare product donations for distribution around the world. Sign up your team to volunteer at one of World Vision’s warehouse locations throughout the United States and be transformed as you get to know World Vision staff and partners that make our work possible.
  • Host a Chosen Event – Chosen is an innovative employee-engagement opportunity that combines team building and corporate social responsibility. This invitation to child sponsorship puts the power to choose in the child’s hands.
    • Chosen is a transformative experience for everyone involved. Children are given the ability to choose their own sponsor and gain access to essentials like education and healthcare, helping them take hold of their future. Sponsors — your team members — gain a personal connection with a child who just might change their life! A Chosen event can be completely virtual, for remote teams, or held in person when you are back in the office and looking for a way to celebrate while calling your team back to your company mission.

Ready to invite your employees into a transformational story of shared engagement and impact? Explore your options today, and feel free to ask questions by calling 1.866.859.5437 or emailing proudsupporter@worldvision.org. We’re looking forward to partnering with you!

If you want a unique, fun, and impactful way to support your corporate social responsibility strategy, look no further than World Vision’s Global 6K for Water — an annual event that invites participants to bring clean water to those in need by walking or running six kilometers.

Why 6K? It’s the average distance women and kids in the developing world walk for water every day. Whether you host your own Global 6K or sponsor one, it can help elevate your brand, engage your employees, and change the lives of women and children by freeing them from a life spent collecting dirty water.

What began in 2015 as a national event with 1,400 participants has grown steadily year over year. In 2018, 48,000 participants at 930 locations in 30 countries helped bring clean water to more than 63,000 people, with 53 businesses of varying sizes — including international corporations — partnering with World Vision to make the event a success.

86 percent of consumers believe that companies should take a stand for social issues.

Join with your employees and change the world!

Last year, people gathered around the world to walk or run 6 kilometers in support of the Global 6K Water Challenge. In the end, more than 48,000 people and 29 businesses joined together to provide clean water for over 63,000 people. And this year, we plan to do even better!

Why the Global 6K?

Every day, nearly 1,000 children under the age of five die from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and unsafe hygiene practices. We can change that!

Clean water frees children from deadly diseases, liberates women and children from hours spent collecting dirty water, and opens the door to a promising future. By supporting the Global 6K, you can save lives by providing clean water to more children and their families!

Benefits to your company:

  • Unite your employees with a healthy team building activity
  • Engage your local community around a good cause
  • Elevate your brand in the eyes of stakeholders through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • Promote your company’s wellness strategy

How to Participate

Sign up today to join the event or make a one-time gift to support clean water. You can make a difference on Saturday, May 4, 2019!*

*If you can’t join the event on May 4, you can hold your own 6K Water Challenge on any day of your choosing.

Employees embrace the Global 6K Challenge

BRIGHTON, CO — Imagine if you had to trudge nearly 6 kilometers every day to get water. Then imagine if that water was so dirty it caused diarrhea, cholera, and other life-threatening illnesses. For many people in developing countries, this is just a way of life. Yet it doesn’t have to be.

Watermill Express, which focuses on providing safe and affordable drinking water to communities in the United States, has already taken steps to help remedy the situation. “We hosted our first World Vision Global 6k last year in Edinburg, Texas, and it was a success,” says Lani Dolifka, CEO and co-founder of Watermill Express. “Over 180 participants plus several local businesses came out to join this amazing event to raise funds and awareness for those needing clean water around the world.”

For Dolifka, the Global 6K is an event that is close to her heart. In 2016, she traveled to Kenya with World Vision to experience the hardships of the vulnerable firsthand. In fact, she carried water like so many women and girls do around the world. “Carrying heavy cans of water every day is a physically and emotionally draining task” she recalls. “In some cases fetching water may take hours and often the water these women bring home is unfit for human consumption leaving the family little choice but to risk sickness and in some cases even death.”

“Although World Vision’s work is not easy, their commitment to building sustainable solutions for the poor reminds us that God’s love can overcome life’s toughest challenges.”

—Lani Dolifka, CEO and co-founder of Watermill Express

Dolifka’s passion for clean water carried over to the employees at Watermill Express. The staff banded together to serve as the organizers of the Global 6K, ensuring it was a fun and engaging activity for all the participants. This year, they hope to have more than 200 people from across the Rio Grande Valley entered in the event.

World Vision works in some of the hardest to reach places in the world,” notes Dolifka. “And although they are a Christian organization, they help people of all faiths and religious beliefs. Through my visits to the field, I’ve seen them care deeply about the most vulnerable—women and children. Although World Vision’s work is not easy, their commitment to building sustainable solutions for the poor reminds us that God’s love can overcome life’s toughest challenges.”

Join the Global 6K for Water on Saturday, May 4! Your partnership helps World Vision reach one new person with clean water every 10 seconds.

COLUMBUS, OH – Sharing a faith-based mission to help others has made the partnership between World Vision and Thirty-One Gifts—a direct-sales retailer of purses, totes, home décor, and jewelry— incredibly special.

As a family of more than 60,000 independent consultants and 1,000 employees who lead with their hearts, Thirty-One Gifts has donated millions of dollars’ worth of products to help girls, women, and families around the world.

For the last several years, they’ve been funding and packing Women’s Hope Kits full of essential hygiene supplies for women in the U.S. who have survived domestic violence, poverty, or disaster.

“At Thirty-One, giving back is part of who we are. It’s in our DNA and the driving purpose for all that we do,” says Wendy Bradshaw, Executive Director of Community Affairs & Philanthropy. “We love our partnership in providing Hope Kits to help support and empower women, as well as various products that support World Vision’s programs that keep babies warm, deliver medical supplies, and keep girls in school.

“At Thirty-One, giving back is part of who we are. It’s in our DNA and the driving purpose for all that we do.”

— Wendy Bradshaw, Executive Director of Community Affairs & Philanthropy

“We know we are working with trusted experts who know when and how to distribute products. The World Vision team is a wonderful steward of our funding, deeply appreciative of our support, and excellent at sharing the stories of our impact.”

Thirty-One Gifts is also dedicated to giving back in the wake of a disaster—and in 2017 alone, when hurricanes were especially destructive in the U.S., the Thirty-One Gifts family assembled 5,000 Women’s Hope Kits or women’s hygiene kits.

“Taking care of each other and our community is ingrained into our culture, so if we have the ability to respond to disasters in a meaningful and timely way, we are going to do so to the best of our ability,” Wendy Bradshaw says. “When disaster hits, it impacts our whole family: independent sales consultants, customers, employees and their families.”

Thirty-One Gifts has been World Vision’s premier match sponsor for Giving Tuesday since 2015, and Bradshaw says other groups will benefit from our ability to partner on projects that align with their own vision and values.

HOUSTON, TX – When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas last August, few knew it would be the second-costliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since 1900—causing a whopping $125 billion in damage and eclipsed only by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Organizations all over the United States reached out to help, including building-supplies company BMC, which has multiple locations in the Houston area and several employees who had been personally affected by the disaster.

By partnering with World Vision to meet an immediate need, BMC’s Dallas Fort Worth team hosted what’s known as a kit build. About 25 employees assembled hygiene kits to help affected children and families, and another 100 corporate employees pitched in by writing encouraging notes on cards to be included in the kits.

“One of BMC’s core values is ‘people count.’ Disaster or not, BMC is committed to giving back in our communities.”

—Joe Barnes, Senior VP of Operations & Supply Chain

“We felt the hygiene kits would be most beneficial for those impacted by Harvey,” says Joe Barnes, BMC’s Senior VP of Operations & Supply Chain. “The kits consisted of toiletries, toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs, washcloths, shaving gear, and more.”

“One of BMC’s core values is ‘people count.’ This core value extends into communities where we live, work, and play. While BMC operates in 40+ major metropolitan markets, a disaster of any magnitude that directly impacts our community gives us ample opportunity to demonstrate support and compassion. Disaster or not, BMC is committed to giving back in our communities.”

Kit builds are a great way to deliver hope at home and remind victims of disaster that they’re not alone. In fact, between September and December 2017, World Vision’s partners helped us provide emergency relief to more than 190,000 people here in the U.S.

“Any time you have an opportunity to get involved with a world-class organization that focuses on helping others, you should do so,” Barnes says. “That is World Vision: good people and an excellent focus on helping others.”

Six kilometers is the average distance that women and children in the developing world have to walk for water – water that is often dirty and dangerous.

This year, enthusiastic employees from Magna Exteriors’ Norplas plant in Ohio will be among the thousands of people worldwide walking or running six kilometers in the Global 6K challenge to bring clean water to communities in need.

The Magna challenge began with one employee, Ryan Dwornik, an athlete who has long dreamt of becoming an Ironman and who wanted his athletic feats to benefit others.

In late 2016, Dwornik proposed an idea to Magna Exteriors President Grahame Burrow: that they work together as a company to raise $100,000 for clean water in the developing world.

Burrow became so personally invested in the fundraising initiative that he created a video message inviting all Magna employees to take part.

“Our company encourages people to give back to their communities, whether it’s in their backyard or halfway across the world.” – Allison Smith, Magna Exteriors Wellness Specialist

“Having our president show his passion for the Global 6K for Water inspired our locations and employees from around the world to rally to be part of something together,” says Allison Smith, Wellness Specialist for Magna Exteriors. “Our Company encourages people to give back to their communities, whether it’s in their backyard or halfway across the world.”

Last year’s event was a first for Magna employees, and organizers were pleasantly surprised at how successful it was.

“Our goal was crushed by having more than 2,000 employees and their families participate across 13 countries, raising more than $250,000,” Smith says.

This year, employees at other Magna divisions will also be encouraged to participate, with a goal to raise $300,000.

Who knew you could help solve the puzzle of poverty while playing a puzzle game on your smartphone?

ZiMAD, the creators of the Magic Jigsaw Puzzles game app, had an inkling in late 2015 that it could happen. Leaders at ZiMAD saw in a survey that many of their 25 million users had expressed interest in supporting organizations helping children around the world—so they decided to launch a charity campaign of their own. “As a socially oriented company, we wanted to provide our users with [the] opportunity to contribute and support [a] program that really matters to them,” says Maria Neumiarzhytskaia, PR manager for ZiMAD. The San Francisco-based company launched a partnership with World Vision in May 2016. ZiMAD pledged a portion of its puzzle income from that month to World Vision, promoting the partnership on social media and directly through the game interface. In June, they created three special puzzle packs and donated a percentage of the proceeds from those sales to World Vision.

Since 2016, the effort has raised just under $255,000 for World Vision’s education, water, child protection, mother and child health, and emergency relief efforts.

Maria says they plan to continue as long as the campaign keeps producing positive results and engaging users. “We chose World Vision as a partner because of our players’ high loyalty to this organization and its high rating at Charity Watch,” she says. Maria also says ZiMAD’s employees and fans seem to be united in their support for weaving philanthropy into the game experience. About 80 percent of Magic Jigsaw Puzzles users live in the United States, but the game is also popular in the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, China, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. “We want to make charity an important part of [the] Magic Jigsaw Puzzles game and gradually connect other products,” Maria says. “Being a digital puzzle game [developer], we want to use the power of modern technologies to spread the word and help people.”
